Best Bait for Inshore Fishing in Rockport, Port Aransas & Ingleside, Texas

Finding the best bait for inshore fishing can make a big difference when fishing the bays around Rockport, Port Aransas, Aransas Pass, Ingleside, and Corpus Christi. Redfish, speckled trout, black drum, and mangrove snapper all feed differently depending on the conditions, location, and time of year.

For most of my inshore fishing trips, live shrimp is one of the most dependable baits we use. It can be fished several different ways and gives us a chance at multiple species without constantly changing bait.

Live Shrimp for Inshore Fishing

Live shrimp is one of my favorite all-around baits for fishing the Texas Coastal Bend. Redfish, speckled trout, black drum, and mangrove snapper will all readily eat shrimp.

How I rig the shrimp depends on where we're fishing. Around deeper water, channels, reefs, and structure, I often fish shrimp near the bottom. When we're fishing shallower water or trying to cover more water, shrimp under a popping cork can be very effective.

Fishing Live Shrimp on a Carolina Rig

A Carolina rig is a simple and effective way to fish live shrimp near the bottom. This setup works especially well when targeting black drum and mangrove snapper, but redfish and speckled trout will eat it too.

I like this rig when we're fishing channels, drop-offs, reefs, and other areas where fish are feeding close to the bottom. The weight keeps the bait in the strike zone while still allowing the shrimp to move naturally.

Live Shrimp Under a Popping Cork

A popping cork is another great way to fish live shrimp. The cork keeps the shrimp suspended above the bottom while the popping action creates sound that can attract nearby fish.

This setup can be especially productive for speckled trout and redfish around grass flats, shorelines, reefs, and other shallow-water areas.

Cut Bait for Redfish and Black Drum

Cut bait is another dependable option, especially when targeting redfish and black drum. Fresh cut mullet can put out a strong scent in the water and works well when fish are feeding near the bottom.

This can be particularly effective when fishing deeper edges, channels, or areas where redfish and drum are moving through looking for an easy meal.

Choosing the Best Bait for Inshore Fishing

There isn't one bait or rig that's best every day. Water depth, current, wind, water clarity, and where the fish are feeding all play a role in deciding what I use.

That's why I normally choose the bait and presentation based on the conditions we're seeing that day. Sometimes the simplest setup ends up producing the best bite.
