The mangrove snapper bite has been good lately, with plenty of action coming on live shrimp. We have also been mixing in speckled trout and black drum, making for some fun trips with a good variety of fish.
Mangrove Snapper Fishing Has Been Good
Mangrove snapper have been the main target on several recent trips. These fish are aggressive, pull hard for their size, and are a lot of fun to catch on light tackle.
Live shrimp has been producing consistently. We have been fishing shrimp near structure and areas with moving water where mangrove snapper can set up and wait for bait to come by.
Live Shrimp on a Carolina Rig
One of the most productive setups has been a simple Carolina rig with live shrimp. This rig allows the bait to stay close to the bottom while still moving naturally with the current.
The basic setup includes:
Light spinning tackle
Carolina rig
Live shrimp
Enough weight to keep the bait near the bottom
Fluorocarbon leader
When the current is moving, I like to use just enough weight to maintain contact with the bottom without making the presentation unnecessarily heavy.
Speckled Trout and Black Drum Mixed In
While targeting mangrove snapper, we have also been catching some nice speckled trout and black drum on the same live shrimp setup.
That is one of the things I enjoy about fishing the Texas Coastal Bend. You never know exactly what is going to pick up the bait. On the same trip, we can move between areas and target several different species depending on the conditions and where the fish are feeding.
Fishing the Texas Coastal Bend
