Port Aransas Fishing Report: Black Drum and Mangrove Snapper

This Port Aransas fishing report covers a good bite for black drum and mangrove snapper, with live shrimp producing around rock edges and drop-offs. Live shrimp continues to be one of the most dependable baits, especially when fishing deeper edges and structure.

Port Aransas Fishing Report: Black Drum and Mangrove Snapper

This week I've been targeting black drum and mangrove snapper using live shrimp fished on the bottom with a Carolina rig.

The better bite has been around rock edges and drop-offs in approximately 4 to 6 feet of water early in the morning. These areas give fish easy access to deeper water while providing structure that holds shrimp and other bait.

I've been keeping the presentation simple. A live shrimp on a Carolina rig gets the bait down near the bottom where the fish are feeding. When fishing around rocks, paying attention to the edge of the structure and the depth change can make a big difference.

Live Shrimp on a Carolina Rig

Live shrimp is a great bait for anglers fishing the Port Aransas and Aransas Pass area because so many different inshore species will eat it.

For this week's fishing, the Carolina rig has been especially effective. The weight keeps the bait close to the bottom while allowing the shrimp to move naturally.

Black drum will often pick up the shrimp along the bottom, while mangrove snapper can hold tight to the nearby rocks and structure. When the bite is concentrated along an edge, moving the bait only a few feet can sometimes put it directly in front of feeding fish and too far away from the rock edge will miss the good fish.

Where the Fish Have Been Holding

The key pattern has been:

  • Rock edges, jetties and nearby drop-offs

  • Approximately 4 to 6 feet of water

  • Live shrimp

  • Carolina rigs

  • Bait presented close to the bottom

These types of areas can produce several species, so you never know exactly what will pick up the bait.

Port Aransas Inshore Fishing

The Port Aransas area offers a wide variety of inshore fishing opportunities throughout the year. I also fish the surrounding Aransas Pass, Ingleside, Rockport and Corpus Christi Bay

areas depending on conditions and where the better bite is happening.

My trips focus on inshore and bay fishing for species such as redfish, speckled trout, black drum and mangrove snapper. Whether you're an experienced angler or bringing the family fishing, I provide the rods, reels and tackle for our regular bait-fishing trips.
